Roundup: Hurricane's O'Dell wins Mid-Am qualifier

Hurricane's Sam O'Dell qualified for the 2010 Mid-Amateur Championship at a qualifier Wednesday at the Edgewood Country Club.

O'Dell shot a 5-under-par 66 to win the event by four strokes over Brandon Lacroix from Roanoke, Va.

The Mid-Amateur will be played Sept. 25-30 at Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y.

Huntington's Pat Carter will also play in this year's Mid-Amateur after receiving an exemption after finishing as a semifinalist in the event in 2009.

  • MU SOCCER: Marshall outshot Xavier 21-3 but settled for a scoreless tie after two periods of sudden-death overtime Wednesday night in the men's season opener at Sam Hood Field in Huntington.

    Sammy Boateng's shot in the opening half was tipped over the goal by Xavier keeper Justin Marshall and Devin Perkins' header ricocheted off the bar with 30 seconds to go in regulation. Tom Jackson's shot just a minute into the first OT period was off the bar again for the Thundering Herd.

  • CROSS COUNTRY: Northwestern State has named Heather McDaniel its new women's cross country coach and assistant track and field coach.

    McDaniel spent last year as head of the cross country and track team at her alma mater, Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi. She replaces Haley Blount, who left the Demons last spring.
