Roundup: Boxing event set Saturday night

The East Coast Showdown boxing event will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Best Western Hotel parking lot in Charleston.

The event, in its seventh year, is part of the West Virginia Games. Boxers representing Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia will be competing in the 18-bout card.

William Joppy, a two-time World Boxing Association middleweight world champion, will be the special guest.

  • MU SOCCER: The Marshall women's soccer team will play host to the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitational today and Sunday at Sam Hood Field in Huntington.

    Appalachian State and Iona will open play at 3 p.m. today, followed by the Thundering Herd (0-1-2) in its home opener against Radford at 5:30 p.m. Iona will take on Radford at noon Sunday, followed by Marshall vs. Appy State at 2:30.

    Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth under 13. Tickets purchased for the tournament will allow access to both games scheduled for that day's session.

  • GOLF TOURNAMENTS: The Charleston Regional West Virginia Chapter of the Executive Women's Golf Association will hold a fall tournament Sept. 24-25 at Canaan Valley.

    Registration deadline is Sept. 10. A golf scramble will highlight the festivities Sept. 24 with a winetasting dinner.

    The chapter's Highland Hackers tournament is at 10 a.m. Sept. 25 with a cookout to follow. For more information, call EWGA president Ann Urling at 304-343-9236 or visit www.ewgawv.com.
