Tyler Pate and his senior classmates at Hurricane finally got their shutout.
Pate threw for 133 yards and a touchdown while the Redskins' defense held strong in a 35-0 victory Friday night over Nitro. A crowd of about 1,200 attended the Class AAA Mountain State Athletic Conference matchup at Underwood Field at Nitro High School.
"We're real excited, especially when we get that goose egg on the board,'' said the 6-foot, 165-pound Pate, a quarterback who also plays defensive back. "We've always wanted to do that [against Nitro]. We haven't done that since [the seniors have] been here.''
Senior running back Josh Thompson gained 105 yards on 14 carries and scored two TDs in the opening half to set the tone as Hurricane won its second straight to start the season. Redskins junior fullback Nick Rice added 80 yards on 11 totes and a score.
Hurricane hit a lull in the third quarter, fumbling the ball away on two of its first three possessions and failed to score.
But Pate, who completed 7-of-13 passes with no interceptions, hit senior wide receiver Roger Turner for a 61-yard catch-and-run TD on the first possession of the fourth quarter for a 28-0 lead with 8:10 left. After the Redskins defense forced Nitro into a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, Rice scored on a 17-yard run to set the final score with 4:29 to go in the game.
Hurricane punctuated the triumph by holding Nitro (0-2) out of the end zone after it had driven to the Redskins' 10-yard line.
"We were pretty much just beating ourselves toward the second half,'' Pate said. "We figured out what we were doing wrong and started pounding it, pounding and throwing it down the field.''
"We've got a lot of things we still have to work on. Hopefully we can continue doing what we're doing right now, especially if we can keep getting that big zero on the board -that helps a lot. That's how you win ballgames right there.''
The Redskins' defense held the Wildcats to 90 yards rushing and 140 total yards of offense while forcing two fumbles, recovering both.
Hurricane turned away Nitro twice in the second half after the Wildcats drove to the Redskins' 16- and 10-yard lines, causing a fumble after the Wildcats marched to their 28.

"Pleased to be 2-0,'' said Hurricane coach Willis May. "It's always scary for us playing Nitro and it seems like no lead is safe. A couple of years ago, we were up 28-0 and we ended up getting beat. I was kind of scared in the third quarter.
"I didn't feel like we were getting things done the way we should be. I liked the competitiveness of our kids. There was a couple of times [Nitro] got inside the red zone and we ended up holding them out.''
Nitro showed some life in the second half, but could never sustain the momentum. The Wildcats turned the ball over on downs on four of their five second-half possessions.
Nitro junior running back Michael Hall gained 103 yards on 30 carries, had two receptions for 31 yards and returned a pair of kickoffs for a total of 79 yards.
"I was proud of them,'' said Nitro coach John Painter. "We come out in the second half and they didn't quit. The third quarter was really a good football game. In the fourth quarter, they just gouged us on a couple of plays and got us.
"We don't have a whole lot of depth and these kids are going 48 minutes. It's a lot both ways and they're getting gassed.''
Hurricane scored on two of its first three possessions of the opening half on Thompson's two TDs and junior Khalil Sturdavent blocked a punt that senior Jonathan Horn recovered in the end zone for a 21-0 edge at halftime.
"We've still got work to do, but I see life coming out of a couple of kids,'' May said. "The light bulb's coming on. They're starting to understand what we're teaching them and starting to react to what we're starting to see.''
