Hamilton said work began on the greens shortly after last year's tournament.

"Really the need for that became obvious after the tournament,'' he said. "With the greens we had it could be a very good event, but to take it to the next level and really make it championship-caliber it was a necessary step.

"With a pretty small turnaround time for when we knew we'd have the Tour event to it actually happening, there wasn't time to do that. The course obviously held up very well for the event, but I think when we see it this year we're going to see it on a whole other level.''

Other significant changes to Old White included adding a bunker to the No. 9 hole and increasing the size of the lake on No. 16. Hamilton said the lake was drained and dug out to bring the lake line into the fairway.

Hamilton said the course changes shouldn't take any of the exciting play away from the tournament.

Appleby has already committed to returning for the 2011 edition of the Classic along with Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson (The Greenbrier resort's pro emeritus who will give up the U.S. Senior Open), Sergio Garcia, Kenny Perry and Camilo Villegas.

"I think it's a fair test of golf, but relative to some of the other courses they play on Tour, it's not the most difficult course out there,'' he said.

"There's birdies to be made and there's some spots where eagles can be made, so guys can throw a low number out. It's a great event, but I think you're going to see it get better as time goes on.''
