WVU rejects request for football-related emails

MORGANTOWN - West Virginia University has rejected a request for emails among university officials and football coaches in the month before coach Bill Stewart resigned.

The university Tuesday refused a request filed by The Associated Press under the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act. It cited personnel issues and other legal exemptions.

Stewart resigned June 10. When offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen was introduced as head coach that night, athletic director Oliver Luck said the university was unable to substantiate unspecified rumors that had dogged the program in recent weeks.

Police escorted Holgorsen from a Cross Lanes casino on May 18. No charges were filed. Later, a former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter said Stewart called him after Holgorsen's hiring in December and asked him to find something negative on the new hire.
