Roundup: Winfield’s Gaydosz wins Nehlen Chapter honor

David Gaydosz of Winfield was named the week 5 state high school football player of the week by the Don Nehlen Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.

Gaydosz, a junior, was limited to just three quarters of playing time due to an ankle sprain, but still managed 10 carries for 275 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the Generals' 40-15 win last Friday at Tolsia.

  • GOLF CHALLENGE CUP: The West Virginia Golf Association and the West Virginia PGA will hold their annual Challenge Cup Thursday at Edgewood Country Club. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. and will feature the top eight amateurs against the top eight professionals, based on points standings in four-ball and singles matches.

    The amateur team features Huntington's Pat Carter, Steve Fox and Ian Patrick, Charleston's Christian Brand, Hurricane's Sam O'Dell, Trent Roush of Mason, Tad Tomblin of Alum Creek and Barboursville's Bruce Wetherholt.

    The professional team includes Craig Berner and Josh Bower of Scott Depot, Jonathan Clark of Hurricane, Charleston's Barry Evans, Grafton's Brad Westfall, Aaron Gizzi of Morgantown, Mike Rogers of Buckhannon and Mason's Ty Roush.

  • UC SPORTS: Shelby Ward's goal in the 82nd minute gave Slippery Rock a 1-0 win over Charleston in women's soccer Tuesday in Charleston. UC keeper Catherine Perry made four saves.

  • The UC men's golf team took first place in the WVC Central Regional Tuesday at Canaan Valley Golf Course in Davis. UC shot a total 15-under-par as a team. Ben Beswick finished second overall with an 8-under 136, while Patrick Bonderault tied for third with a 4-under 140.
