Roundup: WVU baseball loses to Virginia Tech

Ronnie Shaban went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Tyler Horan hit a solo home run as Virginia Tech defeated West Virginia 7-4 Friday in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Andrew Aizenstadt (1-0) picked up the win for the Hokies (4-1), allowing one run on four hits and striking out four in 21/3 innings.

Corey Walter (0-1) took the loss for WVU, surrendering five runs on six hits in 42/3 innings. Nate Antone went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Mountaineers (3-2).

  • MU BASEBALL: Brian Welch went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs as Charleston Southern downed Marshall 13-3 Friday in Charleston, S.C. Charlie McCready picked up the win for CSU (3-2), allowing two runs on four hits and struck out nine in 72/3 innings.

    Aaron Blair was tagged with the loss for the Herd (1-3), surrendering four runs on six hits in six innings. Wayland Moore gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning and Brett Mays was torched for five runs in one inning for Marshall.

  • SHEPHERD FOOTBALL: Shepherd announced the signing of 14 players for the upcoming football season on Friday, including three players from West Virginia.

    Tyrek Collier, a linebacker from Charles Town, was a two-time all-state honoree at Washington High School, offensive lineman Daniel Berry of Morgantown High was named to the all-state first team and Martinsburg's Josh Harwood was also a first-team all-state selection.

    Other signees include Carlton Davis of Hagerstown, Md., Shaneil Jenkins of District Heights, Md., Boomer Kaczmarzewski from Clearbrook, Va., Ben Mitchell from Altoona, Pa., Michael Reaves of Fairfax, Va., Olumide Sokoya from Columbia, Md., Tony Squirewell of Cheltenham, Md., Tre'Vaughn Sullivan of Accokeek, Md., Hunter Van Meter from Stephens City, Va., Michael Wingard of Brandywine, Md., and Matthew Wood of Roanoke, Va.
