Advertiser

West Virginia State is scheduled to play an 11-game football season for the first time since 2006, the university announced Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets (1-9, 1-7 West Virginia Conference in 2011) will open their season against Johnson C. Smith on Sept. 1 at Lakin Field in Institute. The Golden Bulls defeated State in last year's opener in Charlotte, N.C., 64-27.

WVSU will play games against Football Championship Subdivision teams the following two weeks, visiting North Carolina A&T Sept. 8 and Elon Sept. 15. State last played an FCS team on Sept. 2, 2004, falling to Western Carolina 77-7.

State begins its WVC slate Sept. 22 with Concord at home and will visit Seton Hill the week after. After its homecoming game with West Liberty Oct. 6, the Jackets will visit Glenville State, and then host Shepherd Oct. 20 and West Virginia Wesleyan Oct. 27.

WVSU will close out the season with back-to-back road games against Fairmont State on Nov. 3 and Charleston Nov. 10.
