Area roundup: State splits with Wheeling Jesuit

West Virginia State's baseball team split a doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit Tuesday at the I-470 Complex in Wheeling. The Yellow Jackets fell 13-5 in the opener but held on for a 7-6 win in the second game.

In the first game, Tom Charles and Robbie Davia each drove in three runs for Wheeling Jesuit, while former Hurricane standout Parker Lang picked up the win. Andrew Pickering went 2-for-3 with an RBI for State.

Jordan Butcher struck out seven in six innings for the Yellow Jackets (14-19, 12-11 West Virginia Conference) in the second game. Pickering went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Bill Smith and Jeffrey Bunch each had two hits. Luke Starre went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Wheeling Jesuit (13-20, 8-15).

  • UC SPORTS: The University of Charleston split a pair of games with Pitt Johnstown Tuesday at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa. The Golden Eagles lost 14-4 in the first game but won the nightcap 5-1.

    In the opener, Kyle Morrow, Zach Vignero and Drew Westover each hit home runs for UPJ, while Rylan Schnably surrendered three runs on seven hits in six innings. Igor Molina hit a solo homer for the Golden Eagles.

    Molina went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and three RBIs for UC (18-17, 10-10) in the second game, while Tim Ponn registered eight strikeouts in a complete game. Jake Warner went 2-for-3 with a double and scored the lone run for the Mountain Cats (19-17, 12-9).

  • Jeff Benes of Palm Beach, Fla., had signed a letter of intent to play football at Charleston. Benes completed 58 percent of his passes for 1,123 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior at Cardinal Newman High School.
  • UC's Rico Williams was named the WVC men's tennis player of the week Tuesday. Williams shut out opponents in singles matches against Shepherd, Fairmont State and Concord, while also picking up three wins in doubles.
