Area roundup: West Virginia State sweeps baseball twin bill from Glenville State

West Virginia State swept a doubleheader from Glenville State Friday at Cal Bailey Field in Institute, winning 11-4 and 20-1.

Jeff Bunch drove in three runs for State in the opener while Noah Blackhurst and Eric Temple had two RBIs apiece. Kelly Williams pitched 62/3 innings for the Jackets.

In the nightcap, Billy Smith went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs for WVSU (17-23, 15-15 West Virginia Conference) while Temple went 5-for-5 with a double, two home runs, three RBIs and four runs. Blackhurst and Andrew Frazier each added home runs for State.

  • TECH BASEBALL: WVU Tech swept a doubleheader Friday from Lindsey Wilson Friday at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, winning 6-2 and 4-3.

    Chris Barnett gave up two runs on seven hits in a complete game for Tech in the opener. The Golden Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

    In the second game, Grant Williams and Austin Lucas each had RBI singles for the Golden Bears (21-28), while Cody Craft's sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Kessinger in the sixth proved to be the difference maker. Aldemar Betrian recorded his eighth save of the year for Tech.

  • UC SOFTBALL: Charleston swept a doubleheader from Glenville State Friday at the Sue Morris Complex in Glenville, winning 6-4 and 6-2.

    In the first game, Logan Tretick went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs for UC, while Bethany Cera went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kayleigh Huck had a three-run homer for Glenville.

    Micki Murzynski went 2-for-4 with a two run homer for Charleston (33-16, 21-4 WVC) in the second game while Janeen Vazquez went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Morgan Scarpellini had a two-run home run for the Pioneers (13-30, 8-15).
