Prep roundup: Riverside rallies past Capital for softball sectional crown

Riverside tallied three runs with two outs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie and went on to defeat Capital 7-4 and capture the Class AAA Region 3 Section 4 softball title Wedneday at Capital.

Sara Winter tossed a complete game and went 3-for-4 with a double for Riverside (15-11).  Sara Pittman hit a solo home run for the Cougars.

  • HOOVER 2, SISSONVILLE 0: Allison Rager surrended four hits and struck out 13 for Herbert Hoover in a Class AA Region 4 Section 1 game at Clay County. Chelsie Stover and Lexi Lawrence each hit solo homers for the Huskies (20-4).
  • Herbert Hoover and Sissonville (18-19) will play at 6 p.m. tonight at Clay County.

  • BUFFALO 15, HANNAN 0: Noell Dingess fired a two-hit shutout, fanned 11 and went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the top-ranked Bison past the Wildcats in five innings in Class A Region 4 Section 1 at Hartford Little League Field.
  • Kelsey Gatens pounded out three hits and knocked in two runs for Buffalo (25-6), which will take on the Wahama-Hanna winner at 5:30 p.m. today.

  • SHERMAN 8, POCA 4: Baylee Harless went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for host Sherman in the Class AA Region 4 Section 2 tournament. Mackenzie Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Tide (19-11).
  • Miranda Linville had a solo homer and Morgan Ball went 2-for-3 for Poca. The Tide and the Dots play again at 6 p.m. tonight.

  • SCOTT 18, MINGO CENTRAL 0: The Skyhawks posted 10 runs in the third inning as Scott ran away with a win in Class AA Region 4 Section 3 at Chapmanville. Kellian Strange and Katrina Conley each had two hits and an RBI for Scott (13-18).
  • The Skyhawks will play the winner of Mingo and Chapmanville at 6:30 p.m. today.

  • WAYNE 15, TOLSIA 2: Jacey Parsons, Savannah Perry, Emily Fry and Kasey Endicott each drove in two runs for Wayne in the Class AA Region 4 Section 4 championship game. The Pioneers (23-5) will play the the Section 3 winner in the regional semifinals. Kristie Lahoda and Jordan Presley had an RBI apiece for Tolsia.
  • TOLSIA 16, TUG 8: Gina Cavins, Kristie Lahoda and Kaitlyn Robertson each had two RBIs for Tolsia. Olivia Ooten went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Paige Runyon drove in two runs for Tug Valley.
  • VALLEY 4, FAYETTEVILLE 3: Kelsey Bird was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs as the host Greyhounds (17-5) eked out a win in a Class A Region 3 Section 2 game.
  • Morgan Wheeler was 2-for-4 with a homer for the Pirates.

    Fayetteville will play the winner of Meadow Bridge and Montcalm today while Valley will take on the winner of that game at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Meadow Bridge.

  • LINCOLN COUNTY 7, HURRICANE 1: Hurricane registered 11 hits but only scratched across one run as Lincoln County earned the Class AAA Region 4 Section 3 championship.
  • Alyssa Cook and Amy Parsons each had two hits and a double for the No. 4 Panthers (23-9) while Faith Huffman doubled twice.

    Cassi Sargent was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the No. 2 Redskins (26-7). Emily Davis had two hits, including a triple.

  •   SOUTH SWEEPS RIPLEY: Parkersburg South earned wins in both ends of a doubleheader by the scores of 2-1 and 6-0, winning the Class AAA Region 4 Section 2 title in Vienna.
  • In the first game, Taylor Wittekind singled in Kristen Hamilton in the bottom of the 10th to provide the difference for the Patriots. Genna Trippett launched a three-run homer and drove in four RBIs for South (20-13) in the second game.

    Ryne Hill had two hits in the first game for the Vikings (17-10).

    Baseball

  • CATHOLIC 7, WAYNE 2: Drew Cable drove in a pair of runs for host Charleston Catholic. Rocco Wilcox went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Class A No. 1 Irish (24-4), while Connor Golden's 29-game hitting streak dating back to last season ended. Ryan Harless and Tyler Adkins each drove in one run for Wayne (16-10).
  • GW 6, WOODROW 3: Clayton Anderson went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for visiting George Washington. Cody Green went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Patriots (16-11). Logan Wriston went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Woodrow Wilson.
  • WINFIELD 7, LOGAN 3: Brandon Wright went 2-for-4 with a double and Matt Wright, Zach Gunter and John Bellomy each went 2-for-3 for host Winfield (14-11). Zach Minnick went 2-for-4 for Class AAA No. 7 Logan (18-4).
  • HOOVER 15, SISSONVILLE 5: Five different Herbert Hoover players had at least two RBIs as the visiting Huskies rolled in six innings. Zach Wright drove in three runs for Hoover (19-8), as did Tristan Fields, who also had a pair of hits and a double. Zach Null drove in two runs for the Indians (9-19).
  • CABELL MIDLAND 15, SC 5: Trent Porter had a pair of hits and drove in five runs as the visiting Knights rolled to a five-inning win. Eli Canterbury doubled and picked up four RBIs for Cabell Midland. Rease Ripley was 3-for-3 with a double for South Charleston (7-23) while Evan Delbart had two hits with a double and three RBIs.
  • NITRO 12, CAPITAL 2: Kip Brewer went 2-for-2 with a double and five RBIs for host Nitro. Ryan McDonough registered 10 strikeouts for the Class AAA No. 9 Wildcats (20-7).
  • SA 6, PARK. SOUTH 4: Joey Dodrill drove in two runs and Ethen Glenn tossed a complete game as visiting St. Albans (24-5) held on for a win. Jacob Wilcox had two RBIs for Parkersburg South.
  • MAN 7, RIVER VIEW 4: Drew Merritt had nine strikeouts and a solo home run for host Man. Thomas Blair went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Class A No. 7 Hillbillies (15-11). Austin Walker knocked in two runs for River View (13-8).
