Roundup: Ross wins Public Links qualifier

Steve Ross of Huntington shot an even-par 70 to win the U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifier Friday at Riverside Golf Club in Mason. Ross, who finished at 2 over for the two-day event, will compete at the Public Links Championship July 9-14 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah.

Barboursville's Bruce Wetherholt finished at 7-over-par and will serve as the first alternate. Tim Fisher of Staats Mills, in his return from a one-year suspension from all USGA championship events, shot 8-over and is the second alternate. (Results, see page 2B.)

  • JUNIOR GOLF: Scott Depot's Chris Williams finished tied for sixth Friday in the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior at Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland, Ky. Williams was 5 over during the three-day tournament and was eight strokes behind winner Jeffery Meade of Ashland.

    Charleston's Will Evans finished tied for 30th at 13 over, while Joshua Bumgarner shot 18 over and tied for 44th.

  • MU SOFTBALL CAMPS: Marshall will offer four softball camps this summer. Player scrimmage camps will be held July 9, 16 and 23 for girls grades 9-12. Cost is $50 for one session, $75 for two or $125 for all three.

    Pitching camps will be July 11, 18 and 25 for all ages. Cost is $30 for one session or $75 for all three.

    Hitting camps run July 17, 24 and 31 for all ages. Cost is $30 for one session or $75 for all three.
