Sports roundup: Campbell wins Mid-Am qualifier at Sleepy Hollow

Ben Campbell of Cleveland, Va., shot a 3-under-par 69 to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course Wednesday. Campbell was the lone qualifier for the Mid-Amateur Championship, set for Sept. 8-13 in Lake Forest, Ill.

Huntington's Pat Carter shot a 71 and will serve as the first alternate, while Brandon Tinney of Hurricane finished 1 over par and will be the second alternate. (Results, Page 2B.)

  • WVU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: West Virginia University announced the women's basketball schedule for the upcoming season on Wednesday. The Mountaineers will open with an exhibition game Oct. 31 in Morgantown against Concord.

    WVU will open the regular season at home with UNC Wilmington Nov. 9. The Mountaineers start Big 12 play on Jan. 2 at Oklahoma. (Full schedule, Page 2B.)

  • MU SOCCER: Marshall's men's soccer team was selected to finish eighth out of nine teams in the Conference USA preseason poll. South Carolina edged SMU for first place.

    The Herd also placed three players on the preseason All-Conference USA team, seniors Tom Jackson and Daniel Withrow and junior Anthony Vigara. Withrow was also selected as the preseason defensive player of the year.
