Roundup: Gabriel joins Shephed staff
Eric Gabriel, a former player at West Liberty, has been named assistant coach of the Shepherd men's basketball team.
Gabriel, a captain for the Hilltoppers as a senior, comes to Shepherd from Mount Olive College, where he served as an assistant for the past three seasons. He replaces Casey Weitzel, who resigned to take an assistant coaching position with Azusa Pacific.
WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia University women's soccer team has announced promotional dates for this season.
The team will host "Dollar Days" where tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and soda each cost one dollar on Friday against La Salle, Sept. 14 against Towson and Oct. 18 against Oklahoma. Friday's home opener will also feature a poster giveaway.
The Mountaineers host Penn State Aug. 31 in a "Gold Rush" promotion where the first 100 fans in the gate get free T-shirts.
Four Mountaineers earned their second career honors, including graduate Nicole Roach, juniors Hope Sloanhoffer and Bethany Yurko, and student assistant coach Marina Galante. Senior Chelsea Goldschrafe, and sophomores Parker Beattie and Reilly Beattie earned their first career honors.
Scholastic All-America status is awarded as a result of GPAs of 3.5 or better for the year.
LOCAL BOWLING: The Wednesday Natural Gas League at Galaxy Lanes will meet and start tonight at 6:15. The Thursday Senior League will meet on Thursday at 1 p.m. and the Tuesday Ladies League will meet and begin on Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at Galaxy Lanes.
