Roundup: Marshall women's soccer opens with win over Ball State

Marshall freshman striker Erin Simmons posted a goal and an assist in her first college soccer match to help the Thundering Herd women's team defeat Ball State 3-1 in the regular-season opener Friday at Huntington High School.

Marshall (1-0) also received goals from Alyssa Cathey and Lizzy Lemons. Former Nitro standout Lindsey Kerns made three saves for the Herd, which outshot Ball State 14-11.

  • The Marshall men's team will host Pitt today in a 2 p.m. preseason exhibition at the Trace Fork Soccer Complex in Charleston. It will be the Thundering Herd's final match of the preseason before it begins regular-season play Friday against Wright State.

  • WVU SOCCER: The West Virginia men's team will host its annual Gold-Blue scrimmage at 4 p.m. today at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.

  • WVC VOLLEYBALL: Wheeling Jesuit, which has won the last three West Virginia Conference regular-season championships and the last four league tournaments, has been picked to win this year's league title in a preseason coaches poll.

    The Cardinals, who checked in at No. 25 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, registered 224 poll points on 13 first-place nods and one second-place ballot. Alderson-Broaddus was selected second with 192 total points followed by Seton Hill with 178. Shepherd was fourth and West Virginia Wesleyan took fifth. Charleston earned seventh place, while West Virginia State was eighth.
