The No. 9 West Virginia men's soccer team fell to host No. 1 North Carolina 1-0 Friday evening in the Nike Carolina Classic.
The teams each took five shots and two shots on goal, while WVU held the corner kick edge at 2-1.
The Tar Heels' Martin Murphy scored the lone goal in the 58th minute as he volleyed a cross from Danny Garcia past WVU keeper Pat Eavenson.
MU SOCCER: Chelsey Maiden blasted the game-winner in the 83rd minute just inside the penalty area as the Marshall women's team bested St. Francis (Pa.) 2-1 Friday evening at Cabell Midland High School. St. Frances (1-3) got on the board first in the 13th minute on a direct free kick from 20 yards out by Eloa Nascimento. The Thundering Herd (2-2) got level a minute later when Sarah Vinson redirected a Maiden cross into the back of the net.
LOCAL GOLF: The First Tee of West Virginia will conduct clinics in the Kanawha Valley Sept. 10 through Oct. 15 at Coonskin Park in Charleston. The sessions will give opportunities for children to be introduced to golf in a positive learning environment, while also learning The First Tee's nine Core Values, including respect, perseverance and honesty. The sessions are recommended for kids ages 8-14 but are not limited to those specific ages. The cost is $65 for the once-a-week, 6-week session. For more information, visit www.wvga.org.
