Capital dedicates home opener to Woolwine

Capital will memorialize former football coach and teacher Jack Woolwine during a pregame ceremony for its home opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Laidley Field against Princeton. Woolwine died in July.

Woolwine's wife, Laura, will be on hand as a check for $1,000 will be donated to CAMC to aid in research or care for the effects of pancreatic cancer. A $1,000 scholarship will also be presented to a senior football player.

The donation and scholarship are set to be annual events as Capital designates each home opener as "The Jack D. Woolwine Jr. Memorial Football Game.''

SSAC football playoff ratings released today

The first batch of SSAC football playoff ratings are scheduled to be released today.

The top 16 teams in each of the three classifications qualify for the postseason, and the top eight in each division earn the right to hold a home game at an approved site. The playoffs are scheduled to begin the weekend of Nov. 9-10.

Catholic boys soccer nationally ranked

The Charleston Catholic boys soccer team is ranked No. 21 nationally in the fall poll by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Catholic is also No. 4 in Region 4 of the NSCAA rankings.

The Fighting Irish, three-time defending Class AA-A state champions, are on a 38-match unbeaten streak. Catholic tied twice last season and hasn't lost since a 7-4 setback to Class AAA Parkersburg near the end of the 2010 season.

Contest winner

James Spreacker of Barboursville was the winner of the Gazette's Gridiron Gold Mine contest for Week 3.

Spreacker's entry was the only one that correctly picked 13 of the 15 possible games this week. For winning, he gets $75 and earns a spot in the season-ending Gold Mine championship, where the prize for winning is $500.
