WVC football: Elon rolls over W.Va. State 48-14
Backed by four TD passes from Thomas Wilson, Elon trumped West Virginia State 48-14 Saturday in Elon, N.C.
Wilson was 18-of-25 passing for 261 yards in the blowout, connecting with Aaron Melette on nine of those passes for 129 yards. Wilson hit Melette for a pair of TDs, both in the second quarter.
The Phoenix (2-1) leapt to a 35-0 lead in the second quarter, but couldn't keep the shutout through the half as West Virginia State's (1-2) LeFloyd Phillip ran in from 70 yards out with 41 seconds left in the second quarter.
The points didn't turn the tides, though. Elon's Thuc Phan ran the ball 15 times for 110 yards, primarily in the second half, while Karl Bostick ran the ball 12 times for 77 yards and a score.
The Yellow Jackets amassed just 251 yards total offense, including 74 on the ground.
West Liberty (2-1) quarterback L.D. Crow completed 13 of 33 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Isiah Moody had 19 carries for 80 yards and a score.
Wesleyan quarterback Jeremy Musselman completed 18 of 31 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Nate Montana also saw time under center for the Bobcats, going 6-of-14 for 57 yards.
Rams quarterback Bobby Cooper threw four touchdown passes and completed 24 of 28 passes for 286 yards, with receiver Larry Lowe catching eight passes for 90 yards and two TDs.
Jihad Rasheed ran for a game-high 56 yards and one touchdown for Shepherd, while Seton Hill's D.J. Carter caught seven passes for 60 yards.
FSU quarterback Bobby Vega went 14 of 27 for 166 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and running back Daniel Monroe ran the ball 16 times for 63 yards. Garrett Davis led the Falcons (0-3) with nine tackles.
The loss drops Fairmont State to 0-3 for the first time since 2009.
