West Liberty took the lead just 1:16 into the third quarter when Jovontae Johnson returned a fumble 22 yards for a TD and a 20-19 lead. The score remained that way until Fairmont's Bobby Vega connected for his third scoring pass, finding Charaun Goodwin for an 83-yard strike to take the lead for good at 25-20 with 1:55 left in the game.
The Hilltoppers had a chance, driving to the 34-yard line before three straight incompletions gave the Falcons the ball with 36 seconds to go.
Fairmont State soared to an early 19-0 lead in the game, but West Liberty's quick strike offense closed to 19-13 before intermission.
Vega threw for 361 yards and three TDs while Chris St. Hilaire hauled in 12 catches for 123 yards and a score. Goodwin recorded 104 yards receiving and a TD. West Liberty's L.D. Crow passed for 145 yards.
