Soccer roundup: Hurricane, Catholic boys remain atop coaches' rankings

Hurricane and Charleston Catholic remain the top-ranked boys soccer teams in Class AAA and AA-A state coaches association rankings, respectively, Monday.

Morgantown and Sissonville hold the No. 1 spot in AAA and AA-A girls, respectively.

Winfield (third), George Washington (fourth), South Charleston (seventh), and Nitro (15th) were the only other Kanawha Valley teams ranked in AAA boys. In AA-A boys, Sissonville was ranked sixth.

Winfield (third), George Washington (sixth), St. Albans (13th), and Capital (18th) were among the Kanawha Valley teams ranked in AAA girls. In AA-A girls, Charleston Catholic was fourth, Herbert Hoover was sixth and Poca was 16th. (See Page 2B for complete rankings.)

Boys soccer

  • NITRO 2, OAK HILL 1: Evan Eich and Geoffrey Bevil scored goals as Class AAA No. 15 Nitro earned a road win.
  • Josh Jones netted the lone goal for Oak Hill in a game that was terminated in the 63rd minute due to darkness.

    Lee Klocke stopped eight shot for the Wildcats (11-8), while Brett Garris made five saves for Oak Hill.

  • PARKERSBURG SOUTH 2, WINFIELD 1: Unranked Parkersburg South jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and made it stick as the Patriots upset Class AAA No. 3 Winfield.
  • Vincent Scalise scored both goals for visiting Parkersburg South (8-7-3), while Preston Sheldon tallied the lone goal for the Generals (12-3-2).

    Girls soccer

  • WINFIELD 5, CAPITAL 0: Five different players scored goals as Class AAA No. 3 Winfield blanked host No. 18 Capital.
  • M.E. Zulauf, Katie Bryant, Emily Cole, Jayne Lawman and Jordan Pauley each scored for the Generals (13-1-2). The Cougars (8-10-1) were outshot 16-1.
