Roundup: WVU picked second in Big 12 women's preseason hoops poll

The West Virginia University women's basketball team was predicted to finish in a tie for second Wednesday in the Big 12 preseason poll.

The Mountaineers received one first-place vote and tied with Oklahoma with 65 points. Baylor, the reigning national champion, was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the conference for the fourth straight year, receiving nine first-place votes and 81 points.

Kansas was fourth followed by Texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and TCU.

  • WVU FOOTBALL: A limited number of single tickets, which means no two seats together, remain for the Kansas State matchup with WVU on Oct. 20 in Morgantown.

    Tickets may be purchased by calling 1-800-WVU-GAME or in person at the Mountaineer ticket office in the Coliseum. Tickets are not available online.

  • WVU SOCCER: WVU sophomore Kate Schwindel was selected the Disney Soccer-National Soccer Coaches Association of America national player of the week Wednesday.

    Schwindel scored the winning goal against Kansas State last week and had three assists in the Mountaineers' 3-2 win at Iowa State, tying the single-game school mark.

  • WVC TENNIS: West Virginia State's Brittany Franco was named the West Virginia Conference women's tennis player of the week Wednesday.

    Franco, a freshman from Deerfield Beach, Fla., posted a 4-0 mark last week.
