Marshall will sport green jerseys on the road Saturday, as Southern Mississippi will sport white throwback jerseys from four decades ago.
The Golden Eagles are commemorating their football centennial, with the program founded in 1912, but are really giving a nod to 1970. Their homecoming game Saturday against Marshall comes three days after the 40th anniversary of one of the program's great victories, 30-14 over Archie Manning and rival Mississippi.
Those uniforms feature black and gold stripes on the shoulders and an oversized "S" on the gold helmet, sandwiched between the smaller "U" and "M."
Marshall last wore green on the road to accommodate a Virginia Tech "white-out," which came with a late 1960s-replica helmet. That honored Tech great and Marshall assistant coach Frank Loria, who died in the 1970 plane crash.
