Putnam rivals meet in soccer sectional finals

A couple of Putnam County rivalries highlight today's soccer sectional tournament matchups.

No. 4 Winfield (14-4-2) will play at No. 1 Hurricane (19-0-1) at 7 tonight in the Class AAA Region 4 Section 1 boys championship game. On the girls side, No. 5 Hurricane (16-2-1) visits No. 3 Winfield (16-1-2) at 7 p.m. in the Region 4 Section 1 title game.

Also in a section final, No. 1 and three-time defending state champion Charleston Catholic (19-0-2) faces No. 14 St. Joseph at 7:30 p.m. today in Class AA-A Region 4 Section 2 at Schoenbaum Soccer Stadium in Coonskin Park. The winners of today's section title games advance to next week's regionals.

Hurricane edged Winfield 1-0 in the boys teams' regular-season meeting with the Redskins needing a goal late to remain undefeated. In the girls matchup, Hurricane and Winfield played to a 3-3 tie. Catholic downed St. Joseph 4-2 in the Bishop's Cup tournament boys championship.

In the girls AAA Region 3 Section 1 semifinals today, No. 7 George Washington (14-4-1) squares off with the Ripley-South Charleston winner at 5 p.m. at the Trace Fork Soccer Complex followed by Capital (9-10-1) taking on Riverside (10-9-1) at 7 p.m.
