GW-SC boys top list of soccer section finals today
The final two tickets in the Kanawha Valley will be punched today for soccer regionals.
George Washington (14-5-2), the defending state champion that finished fifth in the state coaches association rankings, will take on No. 7 South Charleston (14-4-1) at 10 a.m. in the Class AAA Region 3 Section 1 boys sectional championship game at the Trace Fork Soccer Complex.
The Region 3 Section 1 girls section title game kicks off at approximately noon, featuring No. 6 George Washington (15-4-1) and No. 17 Capital (10-10-1).
GW disposed of SC 3-0 during the regular season in both teams' season opener Aug. 18. The Black Eagles, though, have turned things around, finishing with their best season in years. SC beat No. 2 Parkersburg (2-1), lost to No. 1 Hurricane (3-2) after leading at halftime and tied No. 4 Winfield (1-1).
The Patriots had to replace seven starters from last year's title-winning team but seem to have found the winning formula again, beating No. 2 Parkersburg (3-0) and No. 15 Wheeling Park (1-0), losing to No. 1 Hurricane (2-1) and tying AA-A No. 1 Charleston Catholic (2-2) this year.
GW defeated Capital 3-1 in their only meeting Sept. 20. These two have a history as the Cougars upset the then-No. 1 Patriots 1-0 in last year's sectional semifinals.
