Kilicli shines in WVU intrasquad scrimmage

MORGANTOWN - Deniz Kilicli scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds, hit 9 of 14 shots from the field and 8 of 10 from the foul line and led the Gold team over the Blue 94-80 Friday night in an intrasquad scrimmage at the WVU Coliseum.

Around 5,100 fans got a first look at the 2012-13 edition of the Mountaineers and witnessed some subtle changes in WVU's attack as it prepares for its first season in the Big 12.

"I want to shoot 3s but I don't want to manufacture them," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "And we've got some talented big guys and we need to get Deniz the ball more and we've got to get Aaric [Murray] the ball more."

Murray, a junior transfer from La Salle, was solid in his first action for West Virginia, registering a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue team.

Matt Humphrey, a transfer from Boston College who played his first two years at Oregon, was even more impressive, leading the Blue team with 23 points.

"Matt Humphrey is still finding his way. Aaric Murray is still finding his way and Juany [Juwan Staten] is a little more comfortable because he practiced some last year," said Huggins.

Kilicli was one of five double-digit scorers for the Gold as Jabarie Hinds added 23 points, Aaron Brown 16, Keaton Miles 12 and Gary Browne 11 along with eight assists.

Dominique Rutledge had a team-best 11 rebounds for the Gold.

The Blue also had five scorers in double figures with Terry Henderson adding 15 points and Staten and Eron Harris scored 14 each, with Staten chipping in a team-best eight assists with just one turnover.

West Virginia will play Glenville State in an exhibition on Nov. 6 in Morgantown before the season opener at Gonzaga at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 12.
