South Charleston has done everything it can do. Now all it can do is wait.

Freshman quarterback Kentre Grier threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as SC beat No. 21 Parkersburg 41-21 Friday night at Stadium Field in Parkersburg.

The Black Eagles (6-4) entered the game ranked No. 19 in the Class AAA playoff chase, three spots out of the final berth. They have concluded their regular season and must wait to see if they can move up enough to qualify.

History is on their side - the last time a Mountain State Athletic Conference team went 6-4 and did not make the playoffs was Nitro in 1999.

Grier finished the game 10 of 13 passing for 234 yards with TD passes of 69, 50 and 7 yards. His rushing touchdown went for 50 yards to give the Black Eagles a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Adam Lindamood got the Big Reds (4-5) on the board in the second quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run, but SC answered three minutes later on a Ken Haynes 1-yard score to make it 20-7 just before halftime.

Grier found Kevin Forrest through the air for a score to increase the Black Eagles' lead early in the third and, two minutes later, Trevond Reese scored an 84-yard punt return to make it 34-7.

"We went into it with the mindset that it was our last game,'' Reese said, "and if we lost, it could be our last game. Regardless, we wanted to show everybody that we're for real, and that we wanted to be here and we were going to play our hardest and give it our all.

"We knew that they weren't very good tacklers in space. We watched film on them, so we tried to get our athletes in space and make them make some moves. Once we got them down, we weren't going to let up. They kept fighting hard to come back - the lead was just too big to come back.''

Lindamood and Aaron Roberts scored TDs late in the third quarter to rally the Big Reds within 13 points, but Grier hit Forrest for a second score - this one from 69 yards - to seal the win.

Forrest was SC's leading receiver with three catches for 135 yards to go with his two TDs, and Reese caught five passes for 80 yards.

Lindamood finished as the game's leading rusher, gaining 267 yards on 40 carries.

  • SYMMES VALLEY 21, BUFFALO 20: Symmes Valley (Ohio) blocked a field-goal attempt late in the game and scored the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left to earn a home victory.
  • With Buffalo (7-2) leading 20-14 with less than two minutes remaining, the Bison tried a 34-yard field goal, but Symmes Valley blocked it, picked it up and returned it to the Buffalo 25.

Shortly thereafter, D.J. Miller scored on a 2-yard run, and Tyler Ferguson kicked the tie-breaking extra point.

Buffalo started the night at No. 7 in Class A.

The loss tarnished a big night for Buffalo's Levin Jordan and Laythen Good. Jordan completed 8 of 17 passes for 178 yards and an interception and two touchdowns. Good carried 16 times for 83 yards and caught four passes for 114 yards, including a 69-yarder to open the scoring.
