Roundup: Storm postponements include volleyball sectionals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The remnants of Hurricane Sandy that brought significant snowfall to the state on Tuesday forced several postponements.

All the high school volleyball sectional tournaments in the Kanawha Valley were affected. Class AAA Region 3 Section 1 featuring host Capital, George Washington, Ripley, Riverside and South Charleston was moved to today along with AAA Region 4 Section 1 with Hurricane, Nitro, Point Pleasant, host St. Albans and Winfield, and Class A Region 4 Section 1 featuring host Buffalo, Charleston Catholic, Hannan, St. Joseph and Wahama.

Class AA Region 4 Section 1 with Clay County, host Herbert Hoover, Nicholas County, Poca and Sissonville will start Thursday. (See Page 2B for pairings and schedule.)

Other postponements:

  • WVU Tech men's basketball game with Ohio Valley in Montgomery was postponed and will be made up at a later date.
  • The West Virginia University women's basketball exhibition against Alderson-Broaddus was called off Tuesday because of hazardous road conditions. The two teams will play at 7 tonight at the Coliseum in Morgantown. The event is free and open to the public and fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat.
  • The start times for the Kanawha County Middle School soccer tournament championships Saturday at Schoenbaum Soccer Stadium in Coonskin Park were changed again. The girls title game kicks off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 8 p.m. (See Page 2B for pairings and schedule.)

  • UC SOCCER: The University of Charleston men's soccer team is fourth in the NCAA Division II poll and No. 1 in the Atlantic Region.

    The Golden Eagles (13-2) moved up a spot from the previous week in the national rankings. Davis & Elkins (13-3-1) was No. 20 in the national poll and third in the Atlantic Region while West Virginia Wesleyan was fifth regionally and Wheeling Jesuit eighth.
