  • WVU SPORTS: The WVU women's basketball team was No. 22 in the USA Today-ESPN Top 25 coaches preseason poll Tuesday. The Mountaineers were No. 17 in the Associated Press poll.

    Baylor, the defending national champion and Big 12 favorite, was No. 1 in both polls. Big 12 members Oklahoma (No. 14), Oklahoma State (No. 24) and Kansas (No. 25) were also ranked in the USA Today-ESPN Top 25 while Texas and Iowa State received votes.

  • Three WVU wrestlers earned preseason rankings by InterMat. Mountaineer juniors Colin Johnston, who competes at the 133-pound weight class, was No. 17 while Nathan Pennesi (141) was ranked No. 19 and Lance Bryson (184) No. 20. WVU opens the season at 11 a.m. Sunday against Kutztown, host No. 15 Maryland and Johns Hopkins at the Terrapin Duals in College Park, Md.
  • The WVU rifle team was No. 1 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association for the fourth straight week. TCU and Kentucky were second and third, respectively.
  • The top-seeded WVU (11-3-4) takes on No. 8 TCU (6-9-3) in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 women's soccer championships at 6:30 p.m. today in San Antonio. The Mountaineers, who own a 13-match unbeaten streak, defeated the Horned Frogs 2-1 during the regular season. The game will be streamed live by the Big 12 Digital Network on Big12Sports.com.
  • WVU women's soccer player Frances Silva was among 99 student-athletes selected to the Academic All-Big 12 team. Silva was also only one of seven with a 4.0 grade-point average. Iowa State led all teams with 18 total honorees while Baylor had the most first-team picks with 14.
  • WVU's Kara Blosser and Sara Keane were chosen Big 12 women's soccer newcomer and defensive player of the week, respectively. Blosser scored the winning goal at Texas Friday while Keane turned in seven saves.

  • MU SOCCER: Marshall freshman forward Erin Simmons was named to the Conference USA All-Conference women's soccer third team and all-freshman squad Tuesday. The Gahanna, Ohio, resident shared the team lead with six goals.
