Roundup: GW, Hoover advance to state volleyball tournament

For a third straight year, George Washington is back in the state volleyball tournament.

The Patriots didn't drop a set Saturday in winning the Class AAA Region 3 championship at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. In the first round, GW beat Woodrow Wilson 25-13, 25-8, 25-16, setting up a finals match against Greenbrier East. The Patriots then beat the Spartans 25-12, 25-19, 25-20.

GW's quarterfinal opponent in the state tournament, which is set for Friday and Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center, will be determined today in a draw. Both the regional champs and runners-up advance to the state tournament.

Hannah Shreve led the attack for the Patriots (44-10-3), turning in a total of 24 kills, six aces and eight blocks in the two matches.

  • Herbert Hoover defeated Nicholas County 19-25, 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 18-16 in a five-set thriller to capture the Class AA Region 4 championship at Sissonville High and advance to the state tournament for the second straight year.
  • Ashton King turned in 15 points and 29 assists for the Huskies, while Hannah King had 27 kills and nine digs and Damia Mogielski added 14 kills. Nicholas also advances to the state tourney as the runner-up. Hoover defeated Wayne 25-19, 25-12, 19-25 and 25-15 in the semifinals. Before last year's trip, the Huskies hadn't been to the state tournament in four years.

  • WVC SOCCER: Charleston's Kelsey LaCroix pushed a shot past Alderson-Broaddus keeper Kate Laird in the 47th minute as the No. 5 Golden Eagles upset the No. 1 Battlers 1-0 Saturday in the semifinals of the West Virginia Conference women's tournament at Trace Fork.

    UC, which outshot AB 17-5, will face West Virginia Wesleyan in the championship game tonight at 6 at Trace Fork. Wesleyan advanced with a 2-0 win over Concord.

  • Alex Gallard, Nathan Schmitt and Lewis Osborne each had a goal as No. 1 UC  blanked No. 5 Shepherd 3-0 Saturday in the semifinals of the WVC men's tournament at Schoenbaum Soccer Stadium.
  • UC goalie Sean Teepen made five saves to record the shutout. The Golden Eagles will face Davis & Elkins today at 1 p.m. for the conference championship at Schoenbaum.
