CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Pairings for the high school state volleyball tournament were released on Sunday with first-round and semifinal matches in all three classes being played on Friday at the Charleston Civic Center.
Class AAA will play matches on court 2, Class AA on court 1, and Class A on court 3.
Championship matches in all three classes will be held on Saturday at center court beginning with Class AA at 10 a.m. Class AAA will follow and Class A will conclude the action.
Two defending champions are back in Spring Valley (Class AAA) and Oak Glen (Class AA) while Wirt County, the defending Class A champion, did not qualify for the state tourney.
George Washington will begin its pursuit of a state championship at 1:30 p.m. Friday against Parkersburg South with the winner taking on the Spring Valley/Hedgesville winner later Friday evening.
The Patriots won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, but have not appeared in a Class AAA championship match since.
"We have to play well on our side of the net," GW coach Missy Smith said. "We can't worry about what happens on the other side of the net. We control what happens on our side and that's what we have to do. We have to play our game on our side of the net."
Herbert Hoover is the only other Kanawha Valley squad in the tournament and will face Philip Barbour in a Class AA first-round match following the PikeView/Ritchie County tilt also scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The Huskies' last championship appearance came in a Class AAA loss to Woodrow Wilson in 1996.
A game in each class will be played at 8:30 a.m. on Friday to get things started. In Class AAA, Parkersburg will meet Greenbrier East, in Class AA Oak Glen will square off with James Monroe, and in Class A Tyler Consolidated will take on Fayetteville.
