Roundup: UC’s Surbaugh receives WVC honor

Charleston midfielder Elyse Surbaugh has been tabbed the West Virginia Conference's women's soccer player of the year.

Surbaugh led the Golden Eagles with 17 points on six goals and five assists, helping her team to the conference tournament finals. Two of her scores went for game-winners. She tied for fifth in the conference in points and was tied for seventh in goals.

Davis & Elkins forward Taylor Morton earned freshman of the year honors, while West Virginia Wesleyan's Patrick Holguin received the coach of the year award.

  • MU SPORTS: Marshall diver Lauren Rone has been named Conference USA diver of the week after her record-setting performance against Radford on Saturday.

    The senior won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions against the Highlanders. Rone collected season highs in each event while breaking the Marshall school record with a score of 283.87 in the 1-meter. She previously qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the 1-meter for third time in her career during the West Virginia State Games.

  • WVU SPORTS: West Virginia's women's basketball game against USC Upstate on Nov. 17 will tip off at 1 p.m.

  • For the fifth straight week, the West Virginia rifle team is ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll. The Mountaineers' (5-0, 2-0 GARC) ranking is based on their team score of 4710, shot in a win over then-No. 12 Navy (4613) on Oct. 27.

  • LOCAL SOCCER: The West Virginia Soccer Association will host the 2012 Kohl's Cup Nov. 10-11 at the Barboursville Soccer Complex.

    Over 85 under-9 through under-14 boys, girls and coed recreation teams from across the state will be participating in this tournament.
