Roundup: UC's Vincent, Grassie win WVC soccer honors

The University of Charleston, fresh off an undefeated West Virginia Conference regular season and conference tournament championship, garnered the league's top men's soccer honors as Rob Vincent earned WVC player of the year and Chris Grassie was tabbed the coach of the year.

Vincent led the Golden Eagles with 26 points on nine goals and eight assists, producing three game-winning tallies. He ranks among the league leaders in game-winning goals (first), points per game (third), points (fourth), goals (fifth), assists (fifth), assists per game (fifth) and goals per game (sixth).

Grassie, in his second year at the helm of the UC squad, led the Golden Eagles to a 13-1-4 record, including a 9-0 mark against conference teams.

Davis & Elkins midfielder Oliver Bienias was named freshman of the year.

  • WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia men's soccer team was knocked out of the Mid-American Conference championships in the semifinal round by Northern Illinois, losing 1-0 Friday.

    Jayson LeSeth notched the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute off a direct kick from just outside the left side of the penalty box.

    The Mountaineers will now wait until the NCAA tournament selection to learn their further postseason fate. The selection show is 5:30 p.m. Monday and will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.

  • The No. 1-ranked West Virginia rifle team shot its way to a dominating 4720-4624 win over visiting No. 9 Ole Miss in Morgantown Friday.
  • The Mountaineers' team score is an NCAA record and the squad's third school-record total shot this season. The mark bested the previous national record of 4717, shot in WVU's victory over Memphis on Oct. 16.

  • Led by NCAA championship individual qualifier Sarah-Anne Brault, the West Virginia cross country team took fifth place at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday in State College, Pa.
