Roundup: WJ's Pew named WVC volleyball player of the year

Wheeling Jesuit junior middle blocker Jenna Pew was named the West Virginia Conference volleyball player of the year Wednesday.

Seton Hill middle blocker Shelby Kyllo was tabbed freshman of the year while Pitt Johnstown's Linda Renzi was selected coach of the year.

West Virginia State senior Cameron Lewis earned All-WVC first-team honors while Wheeling Jesuit led the selections with four: Pew, sophomore Makenzie Ripley, freshman Madison Strall and senior Allisa Ware. Strall also made the all-freshman squad. (See Page 2B for complete All-WVC teams.)

Pew, a junior from Marshallville, Ohio, guided the Cardinals to a 14-0 league record, a 32-2 overall mark and national top 25 ranking with 358 kills, averaging 3.17 per set, and also contributing 429 assists to go along with a team-high 31 aces. Defensively, she has 203 digs and 124 blocks on the season. Pew ranks among the top 10 in the league in points (first), kills (third), blocks (third) and hitting percentage (fourth).

Kyllo, who is from Anacortes, Wash., was first in the WVC with 1.57 blocks per set and  posted 163 blocks, 54 of which were solo stops.

Renzi, who is in her ninth season at the helm, guided Pitt Johnstown to a fifth-place finish in the WVC regular-season standings with an 18-8 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the league.

  • The WVC volleyball tournament will being its quarterfinal round at 11:30 a.m. today at the University of Charleston when No. 4 Fairmont State plays No. 12 Davis & Elkins.
  • Top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit will then play No. 8 Shepherd at 2 p.m., followed by No. 2 Seton Hill taking on No. 7 West Virginia State at 4:30 p.m.

    No. 3 Alderson-Broaddus and No. 6 UC close the quarterfinal round at 6 p.m. Semifinal matches begin at 2 p.m. Friday with the championship match scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.

  • PREP SWIMMING: Eight high school swim teams will take part in the 2012 HYCAT November High School Invitational Swim meet Saturday at the University of Charleston natatorium.

    George Washington will be defending its title from last year's meet, when the Patriots won the boys, girls and overall championships. Also participating in the meet will be Bridgeport, Cabell Midland, Huntington, Hurricane, Nitro, South Charleston and Spring Valley.
