Area roundup: West Virginia State women improve to 2-0 with win over Concord
The West Virginia State women's basketball team remained undefeated by beating visiting Concord 77-70 Thursday in the Yellow Jackets' first home contest of the season.
For State (2-0, 2-0 West Virginia Conference), senior guard Jasmine Blanton scored a game-high 26 points while Janelle Williams finished with 17. Junior forward Jordan Brock scored 15 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for WVSU.
Concord freshman Leslie Mack, who played her high school ball at Summers County, led the Mountain Lions with 17 points.
COACHING CLASS: The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission will be holding an ASEP coaching class Dec. 4, 9, and 11 at Huntington High School. To register, visit www.wvssac.org.
HOOPS TOURNAMENT: South Charleston High School will host a holiday basketball tournament Dec. 28 and 29 at the South Charleston Community Center.
The event will feature South Charleston, Riverside, Madison Center (Richmond, Ky.) and Pickering (Ohio) Central. The Black Eagles will play Riverside in the opening game at 7 p.m. Friday.
BOXING: The Dawghouse Gym will host a boxing event at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 22 at Clendenin Middle School featuring several amateur boxers from Herbert Hoover along with boxers from Roane County, Riverside and Capital high schools. The main event will feature two-time Golden Glove champion Mike Harless. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $25 for ringside seats.
