CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Morgantown native and former West Virginia University baseball player David Carpenter was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves on Friday.

Carpenter, who was a catcher while at East Fairmont High and WVU, appeared in 30 games last season as a relief pitcher for the Houston Astros and three games after being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. He was later traded to the Boston Red Sox as part of the deal for manager John Ferrell earlier this offseason before being claimed by Atlanta.

The former Bee and Mountaineer posted an 8.08 earned run average in 321/3 innings last season with 31 strikeouts and 16 walks.
