CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The seventh annual Mike Ellis Invitational at Hurricane High School kicks off the high school wrestling season today for many teams in the Kanawha Valley.
"It's such a good event to begin the season," said Hurricane coach Lee Cummings. "It's tough to get these boys out of the woods during hunting season, but this event helps get the kids back on the mats to compete."
The event, in honor of former wrestling coach Mike "Slick" Ellis, is a 14-team super pool dual tournament with four pools wrestling on four mats. The winner of each pool will wrestle for the top four spots in the event.
Hurricane, Ritchie County, St. Albans, Logan, Winfield, Herbert Hoover, Riverside, Cabell Midland, Spring Valley, Buffalo, Nitro, Lincoln County, Point Pleasant and Sheldon Clark (Ky.) will compete. The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. and the finals are scheduled for approximately 3:45 p.m.
Of the 14 teams participating, only Point Pleasant is ranked in the West Virginia Coaches Association-wvmat.com preseason poll. The Big Blacks are No. 3 in Class AA-A.
"We have a number of teams that will fill most of the weight classes offered in this tournament including Winfield, St. Albans, and Hurricane," added Cummings. "Folks are going to see some great athletes compete some pretty intense matches. It's going to be a great time."
