Roundup: West Liberty thumps West Virginia State 119-59

Six different players scored in double figures, with four of those scoring 15 or more points, as No. 1 West Liberty tore through visiting West Virginia State 119-59 in men's basketball Tuesday night.

Alex Faulk and Bubby Goodwin each finished with 17 points to lead the Hilltoppers (7-0, 3-0 West Virginia Conference) while Cedric Harris and Keene Cockburn each added 15. C.J. Hester had a double-double for West Liberty with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

For State (4-4, 2-2), David Ford scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Anthony Hutchins and Juan Johnson each scored eight for the Yellow Jackets.

West Liberty accounted for 32 assists and 10 turnovers as a team while State finished with just one assist and 26 turnovers.

  • STATE WOMEN LOSE: West Liberty's Hillary Southworth scored a game-high 23 points to go with eight rebounds as the Hilltoppers handed the previously undefeated West Virginia State women's basketball team its first loss of the season 71-64 Tuesday.

    Jasmine Blanton led State (3-1, 3-1 West Virginia Conference) with 17 points. Jordan Brock and Janelle Williams each scored 15 for the Yellow Jackets, with Williams accounting for a team-high nine rebounds. For West Liberty (5-2, 3-0 WVC), Jenn Mohney scored 15 and Meghan Wiseman added 14.

  • CHEER CHAMPIONSHIPS: The state cheerleading championship will take place beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Civic Center.

    Brooke, George Washington, Riverside, Jefferson, Lewis County, Logan, Wheeling Park and Winfield will compete in Class AAA. In AA, East Fairmont, Independence, Liberty Raleigh, Robert C. Byrd, Lincoln, Mingo Central, North Marion and Tolsia will participate. Wheeling Central, Fayetteville, Tug Valley, South Harrison, Moorefield, Williamstown, Tyler Consolidated and Wahama are in the Class A field.

    Brooke (AAA) is the only defending champion returning while Tug Valley (AA) and Clay-Battelle (A) failed to make it out of regionals.
