CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Freshman Miguel Bays hit a short jump shot on the baseline with four seconds left to lift host Capital over George Washington 36-35 Wednesday night in a Class AAA boys high school basketball matchup.
George Washington senior guard Luke Eddy, who finished with a game-high 16 points, put a shot from just inside halfcourt at the buzzer, but missed. The Patriots (0-1) tied the game in the fourth quarter, then the teams traded baskets until Bays' winning shot.
"Right now we're happy about any wins we can get,'' said Capital veteran coach Carl Clark. "The kids fought real hard. They had a tough game Monday with Huntington [a 69-57 loss].''
Freshman Tyhree Pratt netted nine points to pace the Cougars (1-1) and Carrington Morris contributed eight points and six steals.
Capital and GW are both rebuilding this year.
"It just depends on how well the kids respond to the things we're trying to teach them,'' Clark said.
