Prep roundup: Morris tallies 22 as Hoover wins

Cody Morris scored 22 points Wednesday night to lead visiting Herbert Hoover (2-1) to a 51-47 boys basketball win against Clay County.

For the Panthers (2-3), Chris Cole scored 15 and Stephen Cole finished with 12 points.

Girls basketball

  • WIRT 50, BUFFALO 49: Buffalo's Chelsey Parkins had 25 points and 17 rebounds but it was not enough as the Bison missed a last-second attempt to take the lead at home against Wirt County.
  • Parkins' stellar statistical line was aided by a 13-of-14 performance at the foul line.

    For Wirt (3-4), Kayla Keeney had 17 points while Miriam Smith and Liz Adams each scored 10.

  • NICHOLAS 52, BLUEFIELD 43: Nicholas County trailed by two points at halftime but battled back to win on the road at Bluefield.
  • For the Grizzlies (6-1), Shealyn Shafer had 15 points and 13 rebounds while teammate Lauren Young finished with 12 points and eight assists.

    Sheila Hopkins led Bluefield (4-2) with 11 points and Tara Jackson added 10 for the Beavers.

  • GREEN. EAST 61, M. MISSION 30: Greenbrier East held Mountain Mission (Va.) to zero first-quarter points and just 10 in the first half on its way to the lopsided win.
  • For the Spartans (5-0), Bianca Andre' scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Elizabeth Romeo added 11 points and Chaunte McDowell chipped in with 10.

    For Mountain Mission (9-2), Tsion Negussie led the team with 11 points.

  • POCAHONTAS 60, BATH 22: Pocahontas County's Heather Snead scored 17 points and had a team-high 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors to the win.
  • Tristin Day (10) and Melissa Workman (13) also scored in double digits for Pocahontas (6-1) while Olivia Workman scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

  • BRAXTON 47, ROANE 29: Taylor Bragg finished with 16 points and six steals to lead Braxton County (5-2) to the win.
  • Emily Harper added two points and nine rebounds for the Eagles. For Roane, Cassidy Taylor was the leading scorer with 12 points.
