Roundup: Two-day Hoops Classic begins today
Boys and girls high school basketball teams from around the state will converge on the Civic Center beginning today for the annual Hoops Classic.
Eight games are on tap for both today and Saturday, with the action beginning at 9 a.m. each day. The final games are scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m.
On the boys side, a pair of notable games are scheduled for today - Winfield vs. Wheeling Park at 5 p.m., and Riverside vs. Capital at 8. Saturday's top boys games see Nitro battling Magnolia at 6:30 p.m. and South Charleston facing University at 8.
The marquee girls game of the event takes place Saturday, when Class AAA No. 8 George Washington faces St. Albans at 5 p.m.
Tickets for the Classic are $5 for first grade and up and cover the entire day's session of games. For a complete schedule, see Page 2B.
MU WOMEN WIN: A solid defensive effort helped guide the Marshall women's basketball team to a 52-46 win over Furman on Thursday at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington.
Norrisha Victrum went 7 for 7 from the free throw line and led Marshall (6-5) with 13 points and three assists. Erica Woods followed with eight points and seven rebounds. Marshall's defense forced the Paladins into 20 turnovers. Furman (3-7) was led by Holli Wilkins with 10 points.
WVU SPORTS: All fans attending the West Virginia-Kansas game are encouraged to take part in the first-ever Stripe the Coliseum on Jan. 28. Fans are asked to wear either gold or blue depending on which section their seats are located. A detailed map of the color layout can be found at www.wvusports.com.
WVC FOOTBALL: Jason Woodman has been hired as the new head football coach at Fairmont State, the university announced Thursday.
Woodman, a 2002 Fairmont State graduate, has spent the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Bowie State. He has also served as an assistant coach at Concord, California (Pa.) and as a graduate assistant at Louisiana State and Florida State.
SOCCER CLINIC: The Kanawha City Community Center will host a soccer clinic Dec. 26-28 from 1-3 p.m.
Children ages 7-18 are eligible to participate and the cost is $20. The clinic will be under the direction of former UC player Petsa Ivanovic. For more information, call (304) 348-6484.
