CHARLESTON, W.VA. -- Former Minnesota Twins and Anaheim Angels player Michael Ryan has been selected to replace Rick Sofield as the manager of the West Virginia Power.

Ryan was a fifth-round draft choice of Minnesota in 1995 and served as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates' Class AA affiliate, the Altoona Curve, last year.

Former West Virginia pitching coach Jeff Johnson will return to fill the same role after spending last season also with the Curve while former Pirates player Orlando Merced will take over as the Power's hitting coach. Merced compiled a .277 lifetime average and finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1991.

Sofield will serve as the Pirates' first-base coach this season.
