WVU (9-5, 1-2 Big 12) got a nine-rebound effort from Averee Fields and five assists from Linda Stepney. The Mountaineers led 26-20 at halftime before being outscored 29-27 by the Longhorns in the second half.
Empress Davenport scored 14 points to lead Texas (7-7, 0-3 Big 12) while Imani Stafford-McGee grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
West Virginia plays again Saturday when the Mountaineers travel to Kansas State.

WVC FOOTBALL: Five football players from the West Virginia conference were selected to the 2012 Don Hansen All-Super Region 1 first team.
WVC Offensive Player of the Year Jordan Roberts from the University of Charleston was the lone player from the conference represented on the offensive side of the ball, while Concord's Jake Lilly and Riyahd Richardson, Shepherd's Keon Robinson and Seton Hill's Tyler Zimmer were all first-team selections on defense.
Glenville State running back Rahmann Lee, Seton Hill's Niko Hall-Brown, Shepherd's Isaiah Shelton and Fairmont State's Matt Wilmer were all selected to the second team.
The WVC had 15 players selected to the third team, including UC fullback Taylor Franz, place-kicker Puma Nuredini and offensive tackle George Davilla.
