STATE MEN LOSE: The duo of Isaac Thornton and Isaiah Hill combined for 51 points as Fairmont State defended its home court in an 88-60 win against West Virginia State on Monday.
Thornton, a senior from Martinsburg, finished with 26 points and grabbed six rebounds while Hill, also a senior, scored 25 and had seven rebounds. Thornton also had a team-high six assists.
The Falcons (10-3, 8-1 West Virginia Conference) led 49-31 at halftime and outscored WVSU (6-9, 4-5) 39-29 in the second half.
Jalen Walker led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points. Anton Hutchins scored 12 while Raymon Austin tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
West Virginia State next plays Saturday at Glenville State in the third of three consecutive road games before returning to Institute on Monday to host Pitt Johnstown.

nnWVU GYMNASTICS: Two West Virginia University gymnasts have been honored by the Big 12 this week.
Alaska Richardson was named the conference's co-Event Specialist of the Week and Jaida Lawrence was named Newcomer of the Week.
The No. 22-ranked Mountaineers opened their season last weekend with a win against Pittsburgh. WVU's next competition is this weekend in Salt Lake City against No. 15 Utah, No. 20 Southern Utah and No. 23 Oregon State.
nnMU SWIM: Marshall's Sarah Kay has been named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week after winning three events and placing third in two events at a quad meet in Indianapolis last weekend. Kay, a native of South Africa, won the 200-yard butterfly on both Friday and Saturday in addition to winning the 400 individual medley on Friday.
nnLITTLE LEAGUE: Dunbar Little League will host signups for baseball and softball for ages 4 through 18. The signups will be at the Dunbar Recreation Center every Saturday in February from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will also be signups at the same location on Feb. 5 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Feb. 19 from 6 p.m until 8 p.m.
Registration fees for one player are $50. Cost for two players is $75 and for three or more it is $100. T-Ball registration is $30.
A late fee of $15 will be applied to anyone who has not signed up by March 1. All players must bring their birth certificate to registration.
