Area roundup: UC picks up win at Alderson-Broaddus

Evan Faulkner and the University of Charleston found their winning touch Monday night in a 69-59 win over Alderson-Broaddus in a West Virginia Conference men's basketball matchup at Rex Pyles Arena in Philippi.

Faulkner hit 7 of 9 shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers, on his way to a game-high 19 points for the Golden Eagles (13-4 overall, 9-4 WVC), who had lost two in a row since upsetting nationally ranked No. 1 West Liberty two weeks ago.

Xavier Humphrey turned in 18 points and six rebounds for UC while Fred Simpson added nine points and seven boards off the bench and Terrell Lipkins contributed eight points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals. The Golden Eagles scored 27 points off the Battlers' 19 turnovers.

UC trailed by as many as 11 points in the opening half but used a late run in last five minutes to tie the game before Faulkner canned a 3 as the horn sounded for a 34-31 lead.

The game remained close throughout the second half, with the Battlers jumping in front of the Golden Eagles five minutes in. UC went back ahead and didn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Casey Ainslie and Jonathan Ferguson netted 13 points apiece for A-B (11-5, 9-3) while O'Dell Eargle chipped in 12 and Roy Brown dropped in 11.

  • WJ TOPS STATE MEN: Host Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals jumped out to a 43-29 lead at halftime and held on for an 85-73 win over West Virginia State.

    Eric Siefert led four Wheeling Jesuit players in double figures with 19 points, followed by Ben Siefert's 18, Justin Fritts' 15 and Darin Harris' 14. Ben Siefert added nine assists and six rebounds. The Cardinals (10-8, 7-7) shot 52.2 percent from the field and received 42 points off the bench.

    Jalen Walker and Anton Hutchins netted 19 points apiece for West Virginia State (7-12, 5-9) while David Ford donated 11.

  • UC WOMEN WIN: Charleston's Chelsea Brumby sank a last-second bucket from near midcourt as the University of Charleston women's basketball team edged Alderson-Broaddus 64-61 Monday at Rex Pyles Arena in Philippi.

    Brumby finished with a game-high 17 points while Leanne Ross chipped in 15 points for the Golden Eagles (10-7 overall, 7-6 West Virginia Conference).

    Cayla Rhodes led the Battlers (4-12, 3-9) with 16 points and Leah Hurst tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.

  • STATE WOMEN WIN: The West Virginia State women's basketball team took an early 2-0 lead and never trailed on the way to defeating Wheeling Jesuit 59-53.
