Roundup: Washington helps UC men roll past OV

VIENNA, W.Va. -- Quincy Washington erupted for 32 points and five rebounds as the University of Charleston men's basketball team rolled to a 96-69 win over Ohio Valley on Saturday.

Evan Faulkner was just behind Washington, pouring in 27 points and recording five rebounds and five assists for the Golden Eagles (14-5 overall, 10-5 West Virginia Conference). Fred Simpson also had 10 points off the bench for UC.

Robert Smelser scored 20 points off the bench for Ohio Valley (3-18, 2-13).

  • STATE MEN WIN: Stephen Thompson tallied 16 points to lead West Virginia State past conference foe Bluefield State 84-58 Saturday in Institute.

    Anton Hutchins and Howard Douglas contributed 13 points apiece for the Yellow Jackets (8-13, 6-10 WVC) and David Ford posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

    For the Big Blues (2-14, 2-12 WVC), who had 30 turnovers against just eight assists, Avery Holliday had a game-high 18 points.

  • UC, STATE WOMEN WIN: Jessi Cowden scored 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Charleston knocked off Ohio Valley 89-77 on Saturday in Vienna. Nichole Perry chipped in 13 points and five assists for UC (11-8 overall, 8-7 WVC) and LeAnne Ross and Chelsea Brumby added 11 points each.

    Kayla Parsley led Ohio Valley (1-18, 1-14) with 22 points.

  • Jasmine Blanton poured in 22 points as host West Virginia State beat Bluefield State 81-65.
  • Jordan Brock and India Taste chipped in 12 apiece for the Yellow Jackets (8-11, 8-8 WVC). Shae Mebane led Bluefield State (10-9, 8-8 WVC) with 14 points.

  • TECH WOMEN LOSE: WVU Tech lost to Notre Dame College 81-52 in the Baisi Classic.

    Senior guard Courtney Sturdivant led the way for the Golden Bears (11-12), scoring 18 points with six rebounds. Nia Nolan added 10 points with three assists and two steals. Lauren Macer paced Notre Dame (9-11) with 25 points.

  • The men's game between Tech and Ohio Midwestern at the Baisi Center was called off.

  • WVU SPORTS: The No. 1-ranked West Virginia rifle team had a strong comeback in air rifle but fell short Saturday, losing 4704-4695 at No. 3 Kentucky. With the win, the Wildcats (10-1, 5-1 GARC) earn their third straight Great American Rifle Conference regular-season title.
