Area roundup: West Virginia State men top Urbana
Advertiser

Raymon Austin turned in 19 points and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench to propel West Virginia State past host Urbana (Ohio) 111-97 Wednesday night in a nonconference matchup.

Anton Hutchins added 18 points for the Yellow Jackets (9-13) while Jalen Walker and David Ford pitched in 15 points apiece, Dimitri Abner contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds and Juan Johnson had 10 points.

State knocked down 25 of 36 free throws as the Blue Knights (9-14) had three players foul out. Urbana surged into the lead at 77-71 with 12:26 to play, but State took control with a 28-7 run over the next six minutes.

Urbana's Danny Goins became just the second Blue Knight in almost 50 years to reach the 45-point plateau, hitting 14 of 21 shots, including five 3-pointers, and 12 of 15 from the foul line. He made his first 10 shots to tie his career-high of 24 points after just 20 minutes.

It's the second-most points in a single game in school history and the second most by an NCAA Division II player this season. Tiffin's Joe Graessle scored 49 against Malone on Jan. 17.

Armond Battle added 20 points behind five 3s and had nine rebounds for the Blue Knights. Battle hit a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to pull Urbana within two points (58-56) at halftime.

Wednesday's matchup was the first between State and Urbana since the 1971-72 season, when the Blue Knights beat the Yellow Jackets 108-95.
