Area roundup: Fairmont State men pick up 87-70 win at State

Fairmont State connected on 52 percent of its shots, helping the Falcons down West Virginia State 87-70 in men's basketball Saturday in Institute.

Malik Stith netted a team-high 15 points and nine assists for Fairmont State (16-5, 14-3 West Virginia Conference) while Brendan Cooper and Isaac Thornton netted 14 points apiece.

Anton Hutchins garnered a game-best 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Yellow Jackets (9-14, 6-11) and Juan Johnson hit for 10 points.

  • STATE WOMEN WIN: The West Virginia State women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game, upsetting Fairmont State 72-62 Saturday in Institute.

    Jasmine Blanton led the Yellow Jackets (10-11, 9-8 West Virginia Conference) with 27 points while India Taste and Asia Greenleaf each finished with 12 points.

    Fairmont State (14-8, 12-5) held a three-point lead at halftime before State rallied in the second half for the win.

    Former Sissonville star Kaitlyn Snyder led all scorers with 29 points for the Falcons, with 18 of those coming on 3-pointers. Hailey Garrett had 15 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks before fouling out.

    State's next game is Monday at Alderson-Broaddus.

  • UC WOMEN LOSE: The University of Charleston women's basketball team couldn't overcome poor perimeter shooting and numerous turnovers as the Golden Eagles fell to Pitt Johnstown 83-69 Saturday at Eddie King Gymnasium.

    UC (12-9 overall, 9-8 West Virginia Conference) was led by Chrissy Keir with 20 points. Rachel Johnson netted a double-double for the Mountain Lions (13-8, 11-7 WVC) with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
