Area roundup: Falk, Morrow lead West Liberty to 95-77 win over UC

No. 3 West Liberty used a 50-34 second half to down Charleston 95-77 in men's basketball Monday in West Liberty.

Alex Falk netted 25 points and six rebounds for the Hilltoppers (23-1, 17-1 West Virginia Conference) while Chris Morrow chipped in 19.

The Golden Eagles (15-7, 11-7), who handed West Liberty its only loss last month, were paced by Quincy Washington with 26 points and Terrell Lipkins with 20.

  • STATE MEN LOSE: Alderson-Broaddus cruised past West Virginia State for a 80-59 victory at Rex Pyles Arena in Phillipi. O'Dell Eargle netted 17 points and eight rebounds for the Battlers (16-6, 14-4 WVC). Raymon Austin scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (9-15, 6-12).

  • UC WOMEN LOSE: Hillary Southworth poured in 34 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead West Liberty to an 88-64 women's basketball win Monday over the University of Charleston.

    The Hilltoppers improved to 16-6 overall and 14-4 in the West Virginia Conference.

    Charleston (12-10, 9-9) was led by Jessi Cowden, who pitched in 19 points and seven rebounds for the visiting Golden Eagles.

  • STATE WOMEN LOSE: The Alderson-Broaddus women's basketball team used a strong first half to down visiting West Virginia State 52-49, snapping the Yellow Jackets' six-game winning streak.

    Amanda Peoples finished with a team-high 13 points for the Battlers (7-15, 6-12 WVC), while Nautica Davis and Cayla Rhodes each had 10. Kashauna Cook and Jasmine Blanton recorded 14 points apiece for the Yellow Jackets (10-12, 9-9).

  • WVC AWARDS: West Liberty's Hillary Southworth has been named the West Virginia Conference women's basketball player of the week after leading the Hilltoppers to a 2-0 mark last week.

    In a win over Ohio Valley, Southworth posted 27 points, five rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists. Against Alderson-Broaddus, she connected for 28 points, four rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist. Southworth is the second-leading scorer in Division II and has led the Hilltoppers in scoring 12 straight games.

  • Pitt Johnstown's Nick Novak has earned WVC men's basketball weekly accolades, helping the Mountain Cats to a 2-0 week with wins over Glenville State and Charleston.
