Area roundup: WVU Tech hosts Central State today

West Virginia Tech enters the home stretch of its men's basketball season today, hosting Central State at 4 p.m. at the Baisi Center in Montgomery.

It's the final home game of the season for the Golden Bears, who finish up with trips to Southern Virginia on Tuesday and WVU Parkersburg on Friday.

Tech (17-10) is coming off a 100-97 victory over Ohio Mid-Western College on Thursday. In that game, David Rawlinson scored 26 points and handed out 11 assists, with teammate Terrale Clark added 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Central State (15-7) already owns a victory over Tech, an 86-49 decision on Nov. 11 on its home floor in a game classified as an exhibition by the Golden Bears.

  • MARSHALL BASEBALL: Three pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as Marshall earned a 3-0 win at Old Dominion Friday in both teams' season opener.

    Ryan Hopkins picked up the win in relief after tossing three innings and yielding just one hit and a walk while striking out four. Chase Boster threw five scoreless to start the game, giving up one hit and punching out three.

    Gray Stafford, Nathan Gomez and Alfredo Brito each had an RBI as part of a three-run seventh inning for the Thundering Herd. Stafford and Gomez each finished with a pair of hits and Stafford had a double.

  • Marshall righty pitcher Aaron Blair was named to USA Baseball's preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list for the 2013 season on Friday. Blair went 6-0 with a 1.17 ERA in the Cape Cod League over the summer and had a 3.98 ERA with 82 strikeouts over 832/3 innings pitched last season for the Herd.
