Area roundup: Wheeling Jesuit knocks off UC in double-overtime

Wheeling Jesuit outscored the University of Charleston men's basketball team 12-6 in the second overtime period to beat the Golden Eagles 86-80 in Thursday night Wheeling.

Justin Fritts led the Cardinals (17-8, 14-7 West Virginia Conference) with 25 points while Recardo Gaddy scored 19 and Ben Siefert had 18 points. The game was tied five different times and the lead changed seven times. Neither team led by more than seven points (which WJU did with less than a minute to play in the second overtime).

For Charleston (17-8, 13-8), Evan Faulkner was the leading scorer with 22 points and Robbie Dreher finished with 20 points. Xavier Humphrey had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

UC closes its regular season Saturday against Kanawha Valley rival West Virginia State.

  • UC WOMEN WIN: Chrissy Keir, Jessi Cowden and LeAnne Ross combined for 45 points as the University of Charleston women's basketball team earned a 67-56 win over Wheeling Jesuit Thursday in Wheeling.

    Keir, Cowden and Ross each finished with 15 points for the Golden Eagles (14-11, 11-10 West Virginia Conference). Cowden and Tianni Kelly added double-digit rebounds with 13 and 11, respectively. Jaila Bryant paced the Cardinals (8-17, 5-16) with 15 points.

  • TECH WOMEN WIN: The WVU Tech women's basketball team rounded out the regular season with a 75-56 victory Thursday over Allen University in Columbia, S.C.

    The Golden Bears got out to a fast start and increased their lead to 48-25 at halftime. Courtney Sturdivant led the way for the Golden Bears (15-13) with 21 points while Amy Gardner added 18 and Amber Tully contributed 15.

  • STATE WOMEN WIN: West Virginia State made three foul shots in the final five seconds to win 68-65 at Bluefield State.

    Jasmine Blanton scored 16 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (12-13, 11-10 WVC) while Kashauna Cook finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
